An old downtown building will become new again as an apartment complex

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Another building in downtown Fort Wayne will soon become another project to turn an old downtown building into living space.

Real America LLC, based out of Fishers, is currently renovating a building off of Harrison and Pearl Streets into a 44-unit apartment. It’s known as the Randall Lofts. The same company is looking to fund a similar project for the old box company building located at Calhoun and Superior Streets that will be called the Superior Lofts.

“There’s the momentum in downtown Fort Wayne and the appetite for investment and living in downtown Fort Wayne is real,” said Bill Brown, president of Downtown Improvement District.

Real America LLC told NewsChannel 15 that there’s a waiting list for both properties. The Randall Lofts waiting list is double the amount of people than apartments available. Real America associates have just started the waiting list for the Superior Lofts. Jeff Ryan, Real America development associate, said this just proves there’s a need for downtown living.

“It’s showing us there is a demand for apartments in downtown in cool, old buildings, and so we’re trying to meet that demand,” Ryan said.

Ryan said Superior Lofts will have four levels. The first level will be used for commercial space. The other floors will be turned into 66-unit apartments.

Randall Lofts will be an income-based apartment, while Superior Lofts will be at market rate.

“One of our board members said it all, he said the thing he’s most excited about downtown Fort Wayne is the next five years,” Brown said.

This follows other living spaces that are currently downtown such as the Harrison and Anthony Wayne Building. The Harrison is currently full with tenants.
