Police: Midnight shooting victims were targeted

Triple shooting to start 2014

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Just 14 seconds into the new year and Fort Wayne police are investigating a triple shooting on the city’s southeast side. Police believe the victims were targeted.

Officers were dispatched to 4815 Reed Street after several people called 911 to report a shooting involving three people, according to city police spokesperson Officer Jason Anthony.

Anthony said shortly after midnight a group of people went outside when gunfire erupted. Three men, ages 17, 19, and 21, were struck, sending the remaining group of people back inside.

Anthony said two men were transported to the hospital in serious condition. A third man was listed in critical condition. Police did not believe his condition will take a turn for the worst.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Police say the shots were fired from a different area of where the victims were. It does not appear there was a shoot out between them.

At least eleven people were at the home, according to Anthony. Two other people might have left before police arrived. Aside from the victims, eight potential witnesses were taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Anthony did not have information on where the victims were shot or how many times they were struck.

Officers discovered several shell casings and a magazine filled with bullets near the back porch of the home where the victims were found. Anthony said police don’t know if there was more than one shooter.

Investigators did not have any suspect information or a possible motive in the shootings.

Outside the home, officers with long guns and extra protective gear stood guard as officers canvassed the immediate area for evidence and possible suspects.

Police said the shooting investigation is the first incident for the department in 2014.

The incident remains under investigation.

Gunfire likely celebrating the start of the new year could be heard for several blocks around the crime scene. Anthony said officers will respond to as many calls about reported gunshots, but admitted during holidays it can be difficult for officers to check every 911 report of gunfire. Celebratory gunfire does not appear to be a factor in the triple shooting.

It is illegal to fire a gun in the city limits.
