Police responded to the Premium Cuts Barbershop at 3530 S. Calhoun Street around 3:30 p.m. and found an unresponsive man on the ground in front of the business.
The man died at the scene.
The school day ended at 2:30 p.m. but there were students involved in after school activities still in the high school, according to city police spokesperson Officer Michael Joyner.
The school was placed on lockdown for a short time before those students were sent home, according to Fort Wayne Community Schools spokesperson Krista Stockman.
Police are currently gathering information and looking for any potential witnesses. Joyner said detectives were trying to verify witness reports that a man was seen running from the area shortly after the shooting.
Calhoun Street is also a busy road and Joyner said someone in a passing car may have seen something helpful.
“If you looked and saw a person or persons running, that could be very beneficial to our investigative process,” Joyner said.
Fort Wayne Police Chief Rusty York and Allen County Prosecutor Karen Richards were at the scene.
No arrests have been made.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to call police or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-STOP.
The incident remains under investigation.
“It’s just tragic. It’s a loss of life. The harm that comes to family members realizing the fact that they lost a loved one,” Joyner said.
