Coroner: One victim died of stab wounds after apartment complex shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Allen County Coroner has identified the names of the two men who were killed after a shooting at Brookmill Court Apartments Wednesday night. According to the coroner, one of the two victims died from stab wounds.

The coroner determined that Sidney Earl Gates, 26, of Fort Wayne, died from stab wounds. Dashawn Jermell Martin, 21, of Fort Wayne, died from gunshot wounds.

Both Gates and Martin’s deaths were declared homicides. Their deaths mark the 27th and 28th homicides in Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2013.

A third woman was in a neighboring apartment when shots were fired. She was hit in the hand by a bullet that came through her apartment wall. The woman was listed in good condition, according to Chambers.

Police announced Thursday afternoon that they believe the shooting, which happened at the Brookmill Court Apartments in the 2700 block of Millbrook Drive off Covington Road, was drug-related.

NewsChannel 15 uncovered Gates and Martin have been convicted of drug charges in the past.  According to Odyssey , the state’s court case management system, Gates has domestic battery charges stemming back to July of 2005 and drug charges in September of 2005.  Martin’s drug charges go back to March of 2010.

Raquel Foster, spokesperson for the Fort Wayne Police Department, said a large amount of narcotics was found at the scene of the shooting.  Foster said they’re also looking for a third man who was involved in the shooting.  Witnesses told police they saw a man run out of the apartment where the shooting happened.  Police are not sure who he is or how he was involved.
