FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Police are calling the death of a man found in the backyard of a home in the 1700-block of High Street suspicious.
Police arrived on the scene shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday after a neighbor called about a body in a backyard. Medics said the victim was declared dead at the scene.
Another tenant in the house where the man lived saw him in the yard earlier in the morning, but didn’t call police for about two hours because they said it’s normal to find the man passed out, according to police.
After speaking with several neighbors, police said they believe there was a fight involving the deceased that turned physical on Wednesday night.
“[Neighbors] are reporting to us what they heard last night, what they saw last night. As a result, we expanded the crime scene and identified a second location,” Raquel Foster, a spokesperson for the Fort Wayne Police Department, said.
Foster said the fight was not reported to the police Wednesday night. The extended crime scene included the alley behind the backyard where the body was found.
Police have not released descriptions of a suspect or suspects but said they are getting a lot of information from neighbors.
“Whoever did this or whatever happened to him, I hope they find out and it gets solved quick,” Kim Fields, who lives across the street, said. “It’s really upsetting. It’s not normal for this neighborhood at all.”
Tammy Deems has lived down the street for 19 years.
“Usually it’s safe. Nothing like this has ever happened, not that I’m aware of,” Deems said. “It’s scary.”
Foster said the incident remains under investigation. The coroner will release the man’s name and the cause and manner of death after an autopsy.
Anyone who has information on this incident should call the Fort Wayne Police at (260) 427-1201 or Crime Stoppers at 260 436-STOP .
