Police: Shooting victim just released from prison

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Police Department is investigating a shooting Thursday evening.

Police were called around 6:45 p.m. to the intersection of Drexel Avenue and Plaza Drive.

When officers arrived on the scene, a victim lying on the ground near a car. He had been shot at least once in the back.

The victim, Sidney Gates, 26, from Fort Wayne, told police that he had been released from prison just three days earlier after serving eight years. He said he did not know who shot him or how many times he was shot.

Gates was taken to the the hospital in serious condition.

Police collected six shell casings next to the car from the crime scene.
