FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Police Department is investigating a second shooting in eight hours in Fort Wayne’s southeast side.
Around 3:30 a.m. Friday, officers were called to the 3300 block of Reed Street after witnesses reported hearing gunshots.
Officers found a man lying in the street, according to FWPD Sgt. Mark Brooks.
The coroner’s office identified the victim as 25-year-old Mark Young. Young is the ninth homicide in Allen County in 2013.
Sources told NewsChannel 15’s Rod Hissong Young appeared to have been shot several times. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition but later died.
A short time later, police found a car abandoned on the side of the road near the intersection of Colerick Street and Bowser Avenue, just a few blocks from where Young was located. Witnesses told police they saw someone leave on foot from the car after it crashed. A K-9 officer did not locate anyone after a search in the immediate area.
Police believe the victim may have been shot in the vehicle and pushed out onto Reed Street. Investigators have not said where the shooting might have occurred.
Officials said they do not currently have a suspect description. They are attempting to contact any possible witnesses.
This shooting came after another fatal shooting in Fort Wayne around 8 p.m. on Thursday. A woman at that scene said the victim was her son and that he died in her arms after being shot in a car near the intersection of Abbott Street.
Sgt. Brooks said both incidents are being treated separately and at this time they do not appear to be linked. Both remain under investigation.
Anyone with information about either shooting should call Fort Wayne police or Crime Stoppers.
