No charges filed in fatal family dispute

Russell Jewel

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has decided not to file charges in a case where a father shot and killed his son back in May of 2013.

On May 29, Fort Wayne police were called to the 5000-block of Wisteria Lane for a domestic battery in progress. While officers were on their way, police said one family member shot and killed the other.

NewsChannel 15 spoke with the victim’s mother a month after the incident happened. Cindy Jewel was there when she says her husband was forced to shoot and kill their son, 42-year-old Russell Jewel, at their home.  She says her son was on pills, alcohol, and spice when he began mercilessly beating her husband, 65-year-old Steve Jewel.

According to a press release sent out on Monday, the investigation has been completed by the Fort Wayne Police Department.

The prosecuting attorney’s office has determined the shooting death of Jewel was a result of self-defense. No charges will be filed against the victim’s father.
