FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Amid uncertainty about the future of the 122nd Fighter Wing, officials there opened three new facilities Thursday morning.

A Joint Deployment and Wellness Center, a recruiting center and Starbase facility are all designed to better integrate the 122nd with the Fort Wayne community.

The deployment and wellness center is set up for all active service men and women in the Fort Wayne area.

Starbase is a science, technology, engineering and math facility, set up for area fifth graders.

This all comes a little over a week after the 122nd learned it could lose its fleet of A-10 fighter jets, due to budget cuts.

But base officials said they’re still looking forward.

“As General Umbarger has said, this base is staying open so we have a lot of future left at Fort Wayne International guard base. So taking care of our families and integrating the community, it’s just the right time for these projects,” said Col. David Augustine.

Officials at the 122nd said all three of their new facilities are designed to be family-friendly.
