Man arrested for assisting in suicide

BUTLER, Ind. (WANE) – Torn crime tape tied to a fence flapping in the falling snowThursday reminded neighbors what happened in Butler Wednesdaynight.

“It’s close to home. I have three little ones and another littleone on the way. It’s scary,” Bobbie Bess said.

Police were called to the home of Robert Crow, 38, at 116 E.Willow St. around 8:20 p.m. When officers arrived, they found JaimeJasso, 43, dead from a single gunshot wound.

Crow made the 911 call, and was arrested for assisting in asuicide. That is a Class C felony. Thursday the Dekalb Countycoroner confirmed Jasso’s death was a suicide.

“This is the first time in my 30-year career to investigate oneof these cases,” Mark Heffelfinger, a detective with the IndianaState Police, said.

Heffelfinger said Crow and Jasso were friends from work.Wednesday night Jasso went over to Crow’s house.

“At some point, Mr. Jasso expressed the desire to commit suicideat which time Mr. Crow provided him the means to do that,”Heffelfinger said.

Police said Crow gave Jasso a handgun. Neighbors heard a loudpop and then said several police cars showed up at the house.

“My dog was barking and I looked out and saw a bunch of cops,”Missy Hawley said. “We were devastated because nobody’s been shothere before.”

Bess looked out his son’s window when he saw police pullingup.

“I saw a dead body in the garage,” he said.

Crow bailed out of jail Thursday morning, but no one answeredNewsChannel 15’s knocks at his house Thursday afternoon.

“Nobody should ever give somebody the right to take their ownlife. [Crow] should spend a long time in jail,” Hawley said.

A friend of both Crow and Jasso called NewsChannel 15 and saidJasso was going through some tough personal issues. He said hetalked Jasso out of killing himself several times in the past. Thefriend added Jasso would have likely taken his own life at somepoint without Crow’s gun, and Crow shouldn’t be to blame.

Bess, however, disagreed.

“It’s just like murder. He pretty much murdered the man,” hesaid. “I wouldn’t want someone to give me a gun to murdermyself.”
